Sony DVD 505 Camcorder Review

About.com Rating zero out of Five

By Emily Price, About.com

Sony’s DVD505 DVD camcorder allows you to shoot quality movies and burn them directly onto DVD. Movies you shoot with your DVD camcorder can be immediately played back in a DVD player, or uploaded to your computer and edited using a video editing program. The DVD505 is Sony’s most expensive DVD camcorder model, with tons of features and a great image quality it’s easy to see why.

Sony DVD505 Basics

Sony’s DVD505 has one 1/3” CCD with 1990k total pixels, 1910 effective. The DVD camcorder has a 10x optical zoom and 120x digital zoom, and records in Dolby Digital surround sound using its built in microphone. The DVD505 records video directly onto a 3-inch DVD and that can play back instantly in your DVD player. This one and a half pound DVD camcorder will be able to run an hour and a half on the included battery with longer lasting batteries available.

Carl Zeiss Professional Quality Lens

The DVD505 has a Carl Zeiss professional quality lens. Your video is only as good as the lens you shoot it through and this is one of the best lenses available on consumer camcorders.

Shooting Modes

The DVD505 has a variety of shooting modes including spotlight, sports, landscape, portrait, beach and ski and sunset. The DVD505 also has Sonys Super NightShot which uses infrared technology to shoot color video at night. In my opinion the night shot on Sonys camcorders is far superior to the night shot on other similarly priced consumer camcorders. If you plan on shooting a lot of video in dark places a camcorder with the Super NightShot is a excellent purchase.

3.5” Touch Panel LCD

3.5” is a pretty large LCD for a compact camcorder. With the larger screen you can see more of what is going on around you rather than get caught behind the viewfinder of your camcorder. A larger screen however will take up more battery power, so it has its drawbacks as well. I have expressed my concern in previous reviews for Sony’s touch panel LCD design. The design makes it easier for you to navigate through windows, but I also feel it makes it easy to damage your LCD screen. Depending on how you treat the screen you could easily end up with a scratched up, almost un-viewable screen within a year.
