What is AVCHD?

AVHD stands for Advanced Video Codec High Definition. AVCHD is a high definition (HD) camcorder format developed by Panasonic and Sony for use in their consumer camcorders. AVCHD technology makes it possible for high definition video to be compressed during recording with a compact camcorder. AVCHD is two times as efficient as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.

AVCHD was developed to record onto 8cm mini DVDs as well as SD memory cards and Memory Stick, AVCHD will also be used in a hard drive camcorder.

The first camcorders to use AVCHD are due to be released in October of 2006 from Sony. Other camcorder companies that have expressed interest in AVCHD include Canon, Samsung, and Sharp.
